Withdrawals of natural gas

The natural gas withdrawn from the National Transportation Network in 2011 (77.41 billion cubic metres) is mainly: (i) for redelivery to users at the network exit points (76.69 billion cubic metres); (ii) exports (0.42 billion cubic metres), mainly to Slovenia; and (iii) consumption by the compression stations and the gas emissions from the network and the Snam Rete Gas S.p.A. plants (0.27 billion cubic metres).

In the energy report compiled by Snam Rete Gas S.p.A. the natural difference between the quantity of gas metered at the entrance to the network and the quantity of gas metered at the exit, due to the technical tolerance of the metering devices, is traditionally defined as the Unaccounted For Gas (UFG).

The demand for gas in Italy in 2011 was 77.84 billion cubic metres, down 5.26 billion cubic metres (-6.3%) compared to 2010, following the reduced consumption by the residential and tertiary sector (-8.2%), following the milder temperatures recorded in 2011, and the thermoelectric sector (-6.9%).

Adjusted for weather effect, natural gas demand decreased by 3.1% compared with 2010.

At the start of thermal year 2011-2012, the development and upgrading work on the transportation infrastructures made it possible to increase the network’s transportation capacity to 370.0 million cubic metres/day (+0.4% compared to the start of the 2010-2011 thermal year).

The increase is attributable to the increase in transportation capacity at Gela, following the deployment of an upgrade on the infrastructures for the imports from North Africa.

The transportation capacity of the network has covered the entire demand of users also for the thermal year 2011-2012. In addition to the aforementioned capacities which concern the entry points interconnected with foreign countries and the LNG terminals, a transportation capacity totalling 34 million cubic metres/day is available at the domestic production entry points.

Snam Rete Gas put out its long-term plan for transportation capacity, which was disclosed to the Ministry of Economic Development on 30 June 2011 and published on the Snam Rete Gas website www.snamretegas.it in the Business & Services section.

The document shows the capacity data on all entry points interconnected with foreign countries and the LNG terminals for the 2012-2013 thermal year and subsequent years up to 30 September 2021.
